Description
The Zamia Furfuracea more commonly known as a Cardboard Palm, are not actually palms they are from the Cycad family, and have been around since dinosaur times!
The Cardboard palm is a rare tropical plant with rigid, woody foliage that emerges from a central trunk.
They are an easy tropical seed variety to grow that is hardy and doesn’t require too much attention, they thrive with lots of sunlight and well-drained soil.
When to Sow Cardboard Palm Seeds
- Sow indoors all year round! The Cardboard palm needs to be in a warm location to germinate.
- Germination: These tropical seeds can take 3-4 months, though we have seen success in as little as four weeks!
How to Grow a Cardboard Palm
- Place your seeds into the bowl of slightly warm water for 24 hours. This kick starts the germination process.
- Fill your seed tray, or pots, with well-draining compost. A mix of 50/50 compost and vermiculite or horticultural sand works well. Moisten the compost, place one seed in each cell half an inch deep, and cover with compost.
- Cover the tray with a clear plastic bag, or anything you can find that lets light in and can create a greenhouse-like atmosphere.
- Place in partial sunlight during the germination process. The plastic cover will help with keeping the warmth in to encourage the seeds to germinate.
- Keep the soil moist but not saturated until the seeds germinate. Keep an eye on the plastic covering, if there is water dripping, loosen the plastic slightly to give some ventilation as seeds can rot if conditions are too damp.
- The seeds should germinate in 3-4 months, so please be patient. Remove the plastic covering as soon as they do. Water from the bottom of the tray.
- Transplant to individual 8cm pots once each seedling is well established, and water well. Move the plant to a position where it will get full sun.
Top tip: Be sure to rotate your Zamia Furfuracea often so it can grow evenly as it will grow towards the sunlight!
