Description

Trachycarpus Fortunei, more commonly known as Windmill Palm or Chusan Palm are native to China, Japan and India. Beautiful fan-shaped fonds appear at the top of a single trunk creating an ornamental exotic statement in your home.

It is one of the easiest tropical plant seeds to grow and fastest-growing palms, it is also very hardy so can even survive outside all winter once established!

When to Sow Windmill Palm Seeds

  • Sow indoors all year round! The Windmill Palm should be in a warm location to germinate.
  • Germination can take 2-3 months, though we have seen success in as little as three weeks!

How to Grow a Windmill Palm

  1. Place your seeds into a bowl of warm water for 3 days, changing the water daily. This allows the seeds to absorb water and starts off the germination process.
  2. Fill your seed tray, or pots, with a soil blend of 50/50 compost and vermiculite or horticultural sand. Moisten the compost, then place one seed in each cell and lightly cover with compost.
  3. Cover the tray with a clear plastic zip-lock bag, or anything you can find that is clear so still lets light in and creates a greenhouse-like atmosphere.
  4. Place in a warm, shaded spot in your house during the germination process. The plastic cover will help with keeping the warmth in to encourage germination.
  5. Keep the soil moist but not saturated until the seeds germinate. If water starts to drip inside the plastic covering, loosen it slightly to give some ventilation as seeds can rot if conditions are too damp.
  6. The seeds should germinate in 8-12 weeks, remove the plastic covering as soon as they do.
  7. Transplant to individual 8cm pots once each seedling has a few true leaves, and water well. Keep the pots near a sunny window but not in direct sunlight and keep the compost moist.

Fun fact: The Trachycarpus Fortunei is the most well known and common palm for our cooler climate, it was brought to Europe over 150 years ago from its native China.
