When to Sow Tomato Seeds:

Sow our Matina Tomato Seeds indoors from late February to mid-March, or outdoors from late March to April. Ensure the temperature is warm enough for the seeds to germinate, around 18-21°C.

How to Grow Tomatoes from Seed:

  1. Sow the seeds 6mm (¼in) deep in pots or trays filled with compost. Water well and cover with a propagator lid or clear plastic bag.

  2. Place the pots or trays in a warm spot, ideally at around 18-21°C (65-70°F). Germination should occur within 7-14 days.

  3. Once the seedlings have grown their first set of true leaves, transplant them into individual pots.

  4. When the seedlings are around 15-20cm (6-8in) tall, transplant them into their final growing positions. You can plant them in grow bags, pots, or directly into the ground.

  5. Support the plants with stakes or a trellis as they grow taller.

How to Care for Tomato Plants:

  • Water regularly: Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Tomatoes need around 2.5cm (1in) of water per week.

  • Fertilise regularly: You can choose to feed the plants with tomato fertiliser every two weeks to help them grow healthy and strong.

  • Prune the plants: Pinch out the side shoots as they appear and remove any yellow leaves to promote healthy growth.

  • Provide support: As the plants grow taller, they will need support. You can use stakes, trellises or tomato cages to keep them upright.

  • Control pests and diseases: Watch out for common tomato pests and diseases such as aphids, whitefly, and blight. Take action promptly to prevent them from damaging your plants.

Benefits of Tomatoes:

  • Tomatoes are a good source of vitamins A and C, potassium, and lycopene.

  • They contain Lycopene, an antioxidant that may help reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, and other illnesses.

  • Tomatoes are low in calories and high in water content, making them a great addition to a healthy diet.

Tomato Recipe Ideas:

  • Caprese Salad: Slice tomatoes and mozzarella cheese, drizzle with olive oil, and sprinkle with fresh basil leaves.
