When to Sow Turnip Seeds:

Sow turnip seeds between March and August for the best results. Plant in well-draining soil that has been worked to a fine texture. Turnips prefer cooler weather, so planting in the spring or Autumn is ideal.

How to Grow Turnips from Seed:

  1. Prepare the soil by working the soil to a fine texture and remove any debris or rocks. Mix in compost or well-rotted manure for added nutrients.
  1. Sow the seeds thinly, approximately 1cm deep and 5cm apart. Cover with a light layer of soil and water well.
  1. When the seedlings reach 2-3cm tall, thin them to 10-15cm apart. This will allow the turnips to grow to their full size.
  1. Water regularly; keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged. Water deeply once a week, or more frequently during hot and dry weather.

How to Care for Turnip Plants:

  • Fertilise: You can choose to supply a balanced fertiliser to the turnips every 3-4 weeks during the growing season.
  • Weed: Remove any weeds that may compete with the turnips for nutrients and water.
  • Harvest: Harvest the turnips when they are approximately 5-10cm in diameter. For the best flavor and texture, harvest before the turnips become too large.

 Health Benefits of Turnips:

Turnips are a delicious and nutritious addition to any meal. They are a great source of fibre, vitamin C, and potassium, and can be roasted, boiled, or mashed. Plus, turnips are easy to grow and care for, making them a perfect choice for gardeners of all levels of experience.
